It might have been fun to actually show the armor sets you were wearing.Ĭombat can become a bit messy with so many different items you can use, you can assign magic attacks to certain buttons but the icons look so similar i forget which do what and end up just pressing them all until i get the right one. Your outfit does change colours when you change class later in the game but thats about it. While you do find different armor throughout the game it doesn't affect your appearance in any way whatsoever. You also dont seem to be able to change your characters appearance much. Kevin sounds ridiculous and Charlotte 'tawks like dis' you might find it cute or you might find it annoying after 5 seconds. The English voice acting could be better. Likely through the simplistic art design and colour palette as well as a very 90's soundtrack, its catchy and reminds me of playing games on the Megadrive back in the day (the sound quality is obviously much better though) The graphics have obviously been upgraded to a fully 3D world but it somehow manages to retain that nostalgic feeling of a 90s title. This of course is a remake of a game from the early 90's which i believe was on the SNES. Its somewhat repetitive but its an addictive loop somewhat comparable to Diablo (Although that may be a little too kind, its nowhere near as deep in terms of gameplay mechanics) Each time you defeat a group of enemies you get a quick summary of how much your level increased and any bonuses you got from avoiding attacks etc helping you level up quicker.

Each character has a range of physical and magic attacks, plus more powerful attacks that trigger a short animation when used. When you're controlling your main character the other 2 will be controlled by the AI, it does a fairly good job at making your characters attack and avoid danger when needed so you dont have to keep checking on them, but if needed you can switch to the other 2 characters at any time and take control as well as being able to make tweaks on how defensive/offensive they play when being controlled by AI. Each character has a different story arc so there's some replay value if you want to experience the whole game. You begin by choosing 3 out of 6 characters to make up your team. Luckily the gameplay makes up for this as it's quite addictive. I think in it's simplest form your three heroes are on a quest to find the Mana sword.

Although i will say im not quite as invested in the story in this game, its not a complicated plot but when different names of characters im not familiar with and have only seen in cutscenes for a few seconds start getting referenced i lose track of whats going on. Despite not really being a fan of the Japanese anime style a lot of their games have (including this one) Square always seem to produce a perfect balance of gameplay, storytelling and soundtrack with their titles. Ever since discovering Nier Automata i've come to appreciate games developed/published by Square Enix a lot more.
